Bespoke lampshades made at my studio in Kent
Individually designed lampshades, made specially for you, in my studio in Kent, the Garden of England.
Hand-sewn soft lampshades
The traditional way of making lampshades is pretty labour intensive: first the lampshade frame is bound, then each layer (outer, lining and trim) is hand-sewn to the frame - six layers of sewing. I recommend using silk for the linings as it looks sumptuous and has the added advantage of being naturally fire resistant.
Most of the soft lampshades available on the High Street or on-line are "hand-made" - in other words glued, albeit by hand! They are lined with synthetic fabrics. The glues and synthetics contain toxins and are highly flammable. My hand-sewn lampshades not only look fabulous, they are better for your health and for the environment. You can choose from my selection of fabrics and trimmings or supply your own.
Soft lampshades can be designed and ordered on-line using my "lampshade builder": please select the "shop" tab at the top of this page and follow the instructions. If you cannot find "the one" on the lampshade builder please telephone or email with your requirements.
Hand-made rigid lampshades
My rigid lampshades are made entirely by hand, the fabric being beautifully hand-rolled over the frame. They can be made in my fabrics and trims or your fabrics or wallpapers. I have a variety of specially designed lampshade card available (ranging from plain white, cream or semi-transparent to metallics and neons) for the interiors.
Rigid lampshades can be designed and ordered on-line using my "lampshade builder": please select the "shop" tab at the top of this page and follow the instructions. If you cannot find "the one" on the lampshade builder please telephone or email with your requirements.
Re-covering, re-lining and restoring soft and rigid lampshades
I provide a service whereby soft lampshades are stripped, re-enamelled (if necessary) and re-covered. Some soft lampshades look good on the outside but need to have the lining replaced - I can do that too!
If you have a rigid lampshade I can strip, re-enamel (if necessary) and re-use the frame so your lampshade is the same shape and size as before.
Fringes and trims can often be re-used - a new lease of life for soft and rigid lampshades.
Ready-made lampshades, vintage lamps, shade carriers
I have a small selection of one-off, ready-made soft and rigid lampshades available to buy at the studio. I also have a constantly changing stock of lamps, some from famous names including Rye Pottery and Jersey Pottery, others are just beautiful or quirky or come from not so well-known makers. Shade carriers in sizes from 4" - 12", round pin plugs and other lamp and lampshade accessories also stocked.
Re-wiring and portable appliance testing
I am PAT certified and offer a re-wiring and PAT service for most types of table and standard lamps.
